Menopause and Hormone Replacement Therapy Q & A

What is menopause?
Menopause is diagnosed when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a period. This change in life marks the end of your fertility and occurs due to a decrease in the production of the female sex hormones of estrogen and progesterone.

The average woman in the US reaches menopause at age 52, but it can occur anytime in your 40s or 50s. As your hormones fluctuate when leading up to menopause, you experience perimenopause and the associated symptoms such as hot flashes and brain fog. Perimenopause can start a few years prior to menopause or only last a few months.

What are menopause symptoms?

Not every woman going through perimenopause or menopause experiences uncomfortable symptoms. For some women, however, symptoms are extremely disrupting to their quality of life. These symptoms include:

Hot flashes and night sweats
Mood changes and irritability
Weight gain
Vaginal dryness
Pain during intercourse
Sleep disruptions
Low libido
Headaches
Joint pain
Dry eyes
Mood swings

Once you’ve passed through menopause, the changes in your estrogen levels can also affect bone health and increase your risk of osteoporosis, as well as raise your risk of developing heart disease.

How is menopause treated with hormone replacement therapy?

Menopause is a natural process and can’t be “cured.” Symptoms, however, can be successfully managed with hormone replacement therapy interventions provided by Dr. Leibman.

Because symptoms are largely caused by hormone imbalances, hormone replacement therapy can be helpful in reducing or eliminating menopause symptoms. Dr. Leibman offers natural hormone therapy that is an all-natural way for you to restore your hormone levels. Rather than coming from synthetic or animal-derived sources, these hormones are plant-based and are exactly the same estrogen and progesterone that your own ovaries make.

Hormone therapy is also helpful in reducing your risk of osteoporosis and heart disease, especially if used in the first ten years of menopause.
