Weight Gain and Menopause

In their 40s and 50s, women often gain weight. It’s is something they often bring it up as a complaint during the initial menopause consultation.
.
There is no doubt that menopause contributes to the weight gain. Studies have shown that the years around menopause are associated with increased fat in the abdominal region. You’ll find that body fat distribution changes from a “pear” (wide hips and thighs) to an “apple” (wide waist)..
.
As we get older, decreased exercise and increased alcohol and food consumption also contribute to the weight gain. We tend to enjoy “social and comfort” eating more and more. Plus, with aging, muscle mass decreases, but fat increases which leads to an increase in body size – even if your actual weight doesn’t increase on the scale.
