PMS and PMDD

Dealing with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

More severe PMS cases are known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). PMDD cases are often confused with depressive disorders because the symptoms are similar. The one thing that is different from a depressive disorder is that the symptoms of PMDD disappear for a while and then return the next month. If you have five of the following symptoms, including at least one of the core symptoms, occurring before your period, you may be a victim of PMDD.

Core Symptoms of PPMD Include:

Feeling depressed, hopeless or self-deprecating.
Feeling anxious, tense or on edge.
Feeling suddenly sad or tearful, or increased sensitivity to rejection.
Persistent and marked anger or irritability or increased interpersonal conflicts.

Other symptoms of PMDD include:

Decreased interest in usual activities such as work or social events.
Difficulty concentrating.
Marked change in appetite, overeating or cravings for specific foods.
Hypersomnia or insomnia.
Feeling overwhelmed or out of control.

Physical symptoms can include:

Headaches, breast tenderness and/or swelling, joint and/or muscle pain, a sensation of “bloating” and weight gain.

Again, just like with PMS, the symptoms of PMDD often symbolize other imbalances within your body or your lifestyle.

After accessing the situation, Dr. Leibman will be able to prescribe lifestyle changes to help reduce your PMDD symptoms. There are several long-term birth control options available:
